What Is Erythritol?

A sugar alcohol (polyol) that occurs naturally in some fruits and fermented foods. Commercially produced by fermenting glucose with yeast. It provides about 60-70% of the sweetness of sugar with only 0.24 calories per gram. Unlike other sugar alcohols, erythritol is mostly absorbed in the small intestine and excreted unchanged in urine, causing fewer digestive side effects.

Mechanism of Action

A 2023 Cleveland Clinic study (Witkowski et al., Nature Medicine) found that erythritol was associated with increased risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), including heart attack and stroke. The study showed erythritol enhanced platelet reactivity and thrombosis formation in vitro and in animal models. However, the observational nature of the study means causation is not established.
