The Dangers of Artificial Food Dyes

Artificial food dyes are among the most controversial additives in the modern food supply. Used purely for cosmetic purposes, they make food look more appealing — but growing evidence suggests they may cause behavioral problems in children and other health concerns.

The most common artificial dyes

What the research says

The 2007 Southampton Study found that mixtures of artificial dyes and sodium benzoate increased hyperactivity in children. This led the EU to require warning labels on foods containing these dyes. California passed a law in 2023 requiring similar warnings, effective 2025.

A 2021 report from California's EPA Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment found that artificial dyes can cause behavioral problems in some children at levels currently consumed in the US.

Why they're still allowed in the US

The FDA's position is that artificial dyes are safe for the general population at approved levels. However, they acknowledge that some children may be sensitive to dyes. Critics argue the FDA hasn't updated its safety assessments with recent research.

How to avoid artificial dyes
